I use Twitter.  I now use the new Google Buzz.  It is going to be interesting.  I am not sure how many are signed up for Twitter.  I am not sure how many people are signed up for Google GMail.  The question is how many of those Gmail people will decided to use Buzz.

"To: Rush Limbaugh

From: Roger Ebert

You should be horse-whipped for the insult you have paid to the highest office of our nation.

Having followed President Obama's suggestion and donated money to the Red Cross for relief in Haiti, I was offended to hear you suggest the President might be a thief capable of stealing money intended for the earthquake victims.

Here is a transcript from your program on Thursday:

Justin of Raleigh, North Carolina: "Why does Obama say if you want to donate some money, you could go to whitehouse.gov to direct you how to do so? If I wanted to donate to the Red Cross, why do I have to go to the White House page to donate?"

Limbaugh: "Exactly. Would you trust the money's gonna go to Haiti?"

Justin: "No."

Rush: "But would you trust that your name's gonna end up on a mailing list for the Obama people to start asking you for campaign donations for him and other causes?"

Justin: "Absolutely!"

Limbaugh: "Absolutely!"

 That's what was said.

Unlike you and Justin of Raleigh, I went to Obama's web site, and discovered the link there leads directly to the Red Cross. I can think of a reason why anyone might want to go via the White House. That way they can be absolutely sure they're clicking on the Red Cross and not a fake site set up to exploit the tragedy.

But let me be sure I have this right. You and Justin agree that Obama might steal money intended for the Red Cross to help the wretched of Haiti.

This conversation came 48 hours after many of us had seen pitiful sights from Port au Prince. Tens of thousands are believed still alive beneath the rubble. You twisted their suffering into an opportunity to demean the character of the President of the United States.

This cannot have been an accident. A day earlier, in a sound bite from your show, you said "this will play right into Obama's hands. He's humanitarian, compassionate. They'll use this to burnish their, shall we say, 'credibility' with the black community — in the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It's made-to-order for them."

Setting aside your riff on Harry Reid, consider what you imply. Obama will aid Haiti to please African-Americans. Haiti has lost untold thousands of lives. One third of the population has lost its homes. Countless people are still buried in the rubble. Every American president would act quickly to help our neighbor. You are so cynical and heartless as to explain Obama's action in a way that unpleasantly suggests how your mind works.

You have a sizable listening audience. You apparently know how to please them. Anybody given a $400 million contract must know what he is doing.

That's what offends me. You know exactly what you're doing."

I been using computers since 1978.  I got a Radio Shack Model I in 1978.

I may have had a computer before 1978.  I do not remember when the C-64 and Vic-20 came out and I owned both of them.  Hell I even owned an SX-64.
Hell I had a Texas Instruments TI-58 programmable calculator in 1978.  It was a hand held computer.

Thank God for Wikipedia.  The Commodore VIC-20 came out in 1980.
The Commodore C-64 came out in 1982.  I owned a number of them.
I ran the BBS for one day on a VIC-20 just so I could say I had done it.  But I ran  Howard’s Notebook on a C-64 for years.

I got a friend, in Kansas City, that went out on black Friday and got a Imac, a Macbook and an iPhone.  He has been a PC guy all his life so that must be interesting.  Hell I would be like a kid in a candy store. I would not know which one to play with.
He says so far he likes the computers and the phone and the operating system.

It never came in my mind to buy an Apple.  At first it was the price.  The Radio Shack TRS-80 was about $600.00 but that was a price I could afford.  OK OK it only had 4K of memory when I got it.  But I upgraded to 48K of memory.  (Kids that is not a typo error.  I am talking about 48K of memory and not 48M of memory.)

If you read my blog and wonder why is Jim Howard so poor…He worked every day of his life.  Often had two jobs… Now you know…I spent it all on computers.  Smile

I am using WordPress for this blog and for a couple of other blogs that I do.  I like WordPress.  It is very popular.  I have paid for a number of themes for WP.  I will buy one and then I find one I like better.  So some people are making money.  If you are sitting at home wondering how to make some money and you have some abilities in programming you may want to look at designing themes and plugins for WordPress.
I have zero ability in that area and in every other area of life.

The theme I am using here is “Thesis.”  I like it.  It is working out very well for me.
I paid $87 for the “Personal Option” that lets me run it on one site.
I am thinking of upgrading to the “Developer’s Option” and that would cost me $77 and let me run the theme on any number of WP sites.
This theme has been working very well with Google AdSense.  Thesis theme lets me put the Google AdSense ads just where I want to put them.  I like that.

If I upgrade thesis then I would make the sites look different than this site but I would still be using the same theme.  It would make it nice and simple for me and I need things nice and simple.
The two other sites I would use it on would be www.hnbbs.com and www.hnb1982.com so you may see a change in those sites.

I guess at the first of January the new rules go into effect and I need to tell you that if you click on the Thesis link and buy the theme I make a couple of bucks.

For some reason I just have a gut feeling that blogs should not have rules.  It is not like we are a radio or TV station and have an FCC license.  We are not newspapers… Maybe it is because I been doing this for such a long time.
I guess I want them to say if you been doing this since before 1995 then rules do not apply to you.  Smile

You will notice a change to Howard's Notebook.  I went from three columns to two columns.
I had a long time friend comment that since the move the font size has been so small that he has had problem reading HNB.  So I have made the font size bigger.
If you been reading my blogs you will know that there is a real person at this end so please if you notice something or have a recommendation please contact me by email or leave a comment.
  My email address is:  hnbbs@usa.net

I am sorry to say that if you have a problem with font size or color or anything like that you may need to come back later and remind me.  I am always installing new software and playing with the site and mess up often.
Back in the bulletin board days, before there was a world wide web, I messed with Howard's Notebook all the time.  There was a blind user that would contact me from time to time and give me tips on how to make Howard's Notebook more readable by his machine.  That was something that I did not think about or know about or understand until he told me and I could ask him some questions.

  So do speak up.
It is such a surprise to me to hear from people that I never heard from before and they will send an email, most often, and they will say I been reading your blog for x number of years and then they make some comment.  I am just shocked that someone would read for years and never comment or send an email.  I guess I talk to much … I would be leaving comments and sending emails.  It just shows that there are a lot of people out there in WWW land and they are all different.

I am not sure why but traffic to Howard’s Notebook is down 40%.  I am not sure that is correct but it is what traffic sites are showing now.  It took place in like the last seven days or so.
I am not sure if it is the Christmas season and people are busy or if something else is going on.
All the traffic that ShowMeBlog was getting I sent over here and I wonder if Google’s spider has removed those search links.  I am not sure how that works it is over my head.

I am not even sure why I tell you these things…I think only people that run their own site or blog even care about about this sort of thing.  I am just glad you came to HNB and I hope you found something of interest and you will come back.

Russell is sleeping in the dinning room so I killed time in my room until it was light outside before I went to my computer in the living room.  So I had nothing to do in my room and I read or attempted to read the policy booklet from Charter Cable.
The print is so small that it is very hard to read.  There appears to be a bandwidth limit per month.  The number is so small I can not  read it.  I will try with sunlight coming in here later or I will ask Russ to tell me what the number is for band usage for a month.
No matter what the number… There is no way I would come near using the bandwidth.  I use very little bandwidth.
Now the question is for me is how much bandwidth is Russell using?
I will have him tell me what the number is and get back here and I am sure comment on the it.
I must be tri-polar or something.  I was so depressed the other day and then yesterday so happy and now I am starting to worry about bandwidth and … We will see.

I will keep this short for right now…  Charter Cable did show up on time today.  But the guy only had a work order for Internet service.  He knew nothing of tv or phone service.
He still wanted and got $80.00 from me.
So much for “Free installation”  and also the “30-Day Risk-Free Trial!” they never heard of it.  I guess you can forget “promo code 505458” ….

But that is not the entire store.. Yes there is more…
There adv, that they sent me, says “Connect multiple TVs in your home at no additional cost” … WELL.. this is Fort Worth and they are not allowed to install anything in an apartment.. There was a cable jack in the living room.  He turned it on… took him about 10 minutes or less…
So that left me with a choice.. I can run 25 foot of cable all over my new apartment and I am not going to do that.. Or I can move my new desk out of the bedroom to the living room…
Or I can go WiFi which I was trying not to do…  So I had to bring up the WiFi router from Dar’s place…  That puts me sharing Internet with Russell which I was trying to get away from because I seem to come last in bandwidth when he is watching movies/tv and playing online games with his computer and Xbox 360.
So  we bring up the WiFi router…

I talk to Charter on the telephone..  I tell them forget the tv and the cable…
Since I was not getting them why was I charged $80.00?
I will not go into all of that..
Also.. remember I was told I was getting a land line phone so I switched my cell phone from $50.00 a month unlimited to pay as you go.. so talking to Charter cost me $4.00 just for that one call.
Anyway..  Since I had the guy on phone..  I said upgrade me to 10M down for $10.00 more a month .. He said I could try it for free for one month (we will see how that goes)..
Well.. he attempted on the phone to upgrade the Charter modem.  It was a Scientific Atlanta modem.  Never heard of them.  He could not get it to upgrade to 10M.  So I had him on the phone and I went to my junk box and pulled a old cable modem and hooked it up and he upgraded it to 10M.

I am going to come back to this subject again and again.. I am sure..

I just did a speed test and I got 2.31 M down.  That is the slowest Internet speed I have had in years.
But I have an old and fucked up WiFi card but I can not blame Charter for that… But I was not planning on using WiFi.

Well I am going to see if I can get an old different USB WiFi card to work…  I do not have money to buy a new WiFi card right now.. Charter has all my money for the month.
I THINK Russ be getting high speed Internet service right now…  But..
I do not have time to check.
I need to fix this problem…
I will try and get an old USB WiFi card working.. It has never wanted to work.. Maybe it will take pity on me.
I may see about installing Linux again and see if the old card will work with Linux.

Before I left Miami I checked to see who the cable service company was for Fort Worth.  I was not happy to hear that it was Charter.  We had their service when we first moved to Miami until they sold out or did something and we got a different company.
I was not happy with Charter Internet service.
They do not get good reviews…I checked on the Internet before I moved here.
My ex-wife and son, that live here in Fort Worth, have DSL service from AT&T.  So I told my ex-wife that I would give her $100.00 a month and that Russell and I would use their service via WiFi.  I had them upgrade to 5 M down.  Now $100.00 is more than it cost them for Internet and phone service.  I made it more to help them out.

Well Russ and I been using their service via WiFi.  Russ is playing games online and watching TV via his XBox 360 and I do not know what all he is doing.. My son is down stairs playing online games sometimes.
My ex-wife does some eBay stuff online to try and make a few dollars.

I use almost no band width.. What I do posting to the blog and reading my email….that is about it..  The Internet service that I am getting sucks …
  Are you ready for this?
Charter sent out their special offer:   Basic Limited cable TV $9.99 for 12 months,  High Speed Internet $29.99 for 12 months and telephone service $19.99 for 12 months.  Their “high speed” Internet service is 5 M down.  For $10.00 more a month I can get 10 M down or for $25.00 more a month I could get 20 M down.
The total is $59.97 a month.  I called and signed up for the service. I do not own a phone and I do not own a TV set.  All I care about, right now, is the Internet service.
They did lock in the Internet service price for 24 months.  I can upgrade the speed anytime I want and I might just do that one day.

I will keep paying Darlene $100.00 a month to help her out and Russ is going to keep on using their WiFi connection.  He is sleeping and does not know that I have ordered cable service.  But I need dependable Internet service so he can keep using their WiFi service and I will be the only one using the cable Internet service.

"The First Thanksgiving", painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930)

"Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. It did not become a federal holiday until 1941. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God, but is now primarily identified as a secular holiday.[1]

The First Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the pilgrims survive the brutal winter. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Indians. The feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. However, the traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie…"    Wikipedia

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.
We as a nation have much to be thankful for and I have many reasons to br thankful on this Thanksgiving 2009.
Our economy is in very poor condition this Thanksgiving day but we know why and who is the cause of the problems and they American people have voted most of them out of office.  There are still a few of them left but they seem to be doing everything in their power to cause the rest of them to be voted out of office.
We have a president this year that is trying bold things to correct many of the problems of the past.
We face hard times but at last we can look to Washington and believe that we have a friend in the White House.

People are starting to say that Google is to big and has to much information on people.  Google has set up a service they call “Google Dashboard.”  It looks like you have to have a Google account and then you can log into the service.
It will then show you what information they have on you and allow you to make changes to the information.

I do not see how this helps the privacy issues.  It is just the sort of information you would expect them to have about you if you use any of their services.
I think the problem areas would be information they get from you if you use Google Mail and the information they get on you when you do a search using Google.

I have talked about using Google AdSense here.  It was my understanding that you were not allowed to tell how much you make with them.  I was in error on that policy.  You can say how much you make with them but you can not give out details about the eCPM, CTR per site.
You know me.. I am very open and honest and it is hard for me to blog when my hands are tied so it is welcome news that I can comment on earning.

So how am I doing with Google AdSense?
I received so far a total of $122.64 from Google AdSense.  At the end of this month I will get about $142.71 from them.
This last month I earned $67.78 from them.  You have to have earned $100.00 before they send you the commission.  Right now one of my goals is to get that earnings to $100.00 a month so that I get a payment from them each month.

The break down is interesting … $30.46 was from ShowMeBlog and $22.58 was from Howard’s Notebook.  The other amounts were from other blogs.
This month so far it is $1.34 for ShowMeBlog and $6.04 from Howard’s Notebook.

When I move to Texas I can be a bit more open about what I am doing… My son is a very private person and it has been sort of hard to blog about some things because he does not want to be mentioned.  When I get to Texas I will not have to worry about that issue.
In fact my son in Texas I am sure will help me by taking some photos and operating the camera sometimes so I can make videos.

Russell and I will be in Texas in 11 days.
My son, here, says he will take me to pick up some boxes on Thursday at The UPS Store.

The ICANN has approved the use of non-Latin character domains.  I can understand why people would want that… But I think it is a bad idea.
One of the great things about the Internet is that it is world wide and open to all.  Now we are going to have divisions.  We have sites that have domain names that are Japanese or Korean or one of the other non-Latin languages.
I think it is going to much easier for China or Russia or some other nation to control the “Internet.”  They will just put filters on that only allow those languages.
Another problem is how are we going to access those new domains.  Even if I knew what it was how could I get my keyboard to access sites with domains like that?

See PC World    See Yahoo Tech

I think it is a bad idea.  I may be wrong.  It may all work out well and open the Internet to many more people.

Today new rules from the Federal Trade Commission go into effect.  The FTC is going to crack down on bloggers who review or promote products and get freebies or money and do not tell readers.
I have always told you up front if I am getting any money or anything else.  The new rules will not bring much of a change here.  The new rules will make me think a bit more when I post something.
I post here daily about sites that I like or services or things I buy or want to buy and never tell you that I do not get paid for those comments.  I may have to start telling you, some how, that it is an un-paid recommendation.  I know that is not the rule… I need to tell you when I AM getting paid.  But I do not even want anyone to think that I might be breaking the rules.  I think the FTC rules are a good idea.
I have seen a few excellent blogs that I did read go to hell… Because when sites like PayPerPost and others started up …those blogs that were so excellent would then be just post after post of promotions so they would get paid.
