It looks like it is going to be a good day in Fort Worth. It is 1000 hours and 56 degrees and it should get to 71 degrees. I have no plans for today unless I decided to format my hard drive and install Windows XP on the computer. I hope I can keep myself from doing it…But there are a couple of programs that I want to run and I can not run them under Ubuntu.
There is a donut shop down the street and I just go back with some donuts. It is not good that there is a donut shop so close to me.
I was looking on the Internet last night and there is a lot of ham radio activity here in Fort Worth. Plus the local ham club has breakfast each Friday at 0700 at the West Side Cafe and it is within walking distance from where I live. I am going to wait until I get a new ham radio. I do not have a radio right now and would be uncomfortable and self-conscious about not having a radio. It would be like a NRA member not owning a gun.

After telling you how great Ubuntu is I hate to have to bring this up… I been having problems for the last couple of days..
I been installing everything and doing a reboot from time to time. No problem. But if I turn the computer off I get an error message and ubuntu will not start. I even did a format a couple of times and re-install of Ubuntu. It was not a big deal since I have the Ubuntu 9.10 DVD.
My computer was on for the last 24 hours and I installed some stuff AGAIN.
I turned off the computer and had the same problem.
I did a reboot and when into the boot loader file and I found a line that was the problem.
The first part of the line checked to see if there was a floppy or A drive and if none then it gave a command:
root=UUID=e9b13c62-7e9d-4256-9784-c06d28b7f04c ro quiet splash
That is the number I would see on my screen when Ubuntu hung up and would not start.
I took out the entire line and I was back in business.
I hate computers.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on this computer. I know … pretty dumb to do it when I am right in the middle of moving from Miami to Fort Worth. But I did it.. Thank God.. I got the printer working right away.. I need it to print shipping labels.
Here is a video from YouTube about Ubuntu 9.10

I got Ubuntu 9.10 installed. It looks nice. It is fast and seems to work well.
Flash is not working for me right now.. I will have to work on that…
The other thing is my printer is not installed. Other people have the same problem getting the HL-2140 printer to work. I will have to see what they did to fix the problem. I NEED the printer working to print out shipping labels.
OK I got the printer working thank God.
This computer was just re-booting, under Windows, for no reason.. It will be interesting to see if it happens under Ubuntu.

This is crazy but I am installing Ubuntu on my computer. I been having problems with this computer.. It has been re-booting…It may re-boot when I am watching a streaming video from Netflix or sometimes when I am playing Civilization IV.
I never know when or why it may re-boot.
So here I am just days away from moving and I formatted my computer… I had a Ubuntu 9.04 DVD. I installed it and it only took about 15 minutes and then it gave me the notice that version 9.10 was out and did I want to install.
I said yes.. very fast it installed it.. but when I did the re-boot.. I got the simple login and not the desktop log in…plus it was flashing and I could not log in..
So I just installed 9.10 again and this time I am doing the upgrade to it.
THEN I will do the 9.40 upgrade.
But to do this when I need my computer to print shipping labels is not smart on my part.. but when have I done anything the easy and smart way.
I also feel like crap.. I am not sure why.. I guess diet.. When I get to Texas I got to eat better.

Today Windows 7 is out. I am sure lots of people are going to be buying it. I think a lot of XP users will just keep using XP. Vista people should go to Windows 7 because Vista is crap.
Lot of Windows 7 will be sold.. But many people are going to hold out if they are happy with XP.
I can not bring myself to spent the money right now for Windows 7.
I can see having a major hardware or software crash and then going out and getting Windows 7 to start all over again.
I am waiting for October 29th when Ubuntu 9.10 will be released. It is free. I have been running Ubuntu for years.. It just is fast, it is pretty neat …but I just can not replace Windows with it right now. I hope 9.10 will let me say goodbye to Windows. I do not think it will be that complete.

Jeff Bertolucci has an article “Consumers Won’t Pay $120 for Windows 7 Upgrade.” I think many of them will but I agree with him. That is to much money to pay to UPGRADE and you are upgrading to the basic starter version.
I comment on this before… It is to much money… I think this upgrade should be $69.99 and a full buy if you are not upgrading should be $120.00 or a bit more.
I am not sure I will upgrade. Yes, Windows 7 is nice.. At last Windows has a version that of Windows that works. XP is not bad but has a lot of problems… Vista is crap.
I may pay out the $120.00 but it is going to piss me off and I am sure I am not the only person… Why piss off your customers?
If Ubuntu gets a few more things fixed in their software… I will say tell MS to kiss my ass.
The next release of Ubuntu (9.10 on October 29th) is going, I think, to have the ability to install a non-free program…I guess you will pay for it and then you can install it.. Sort of like the Apple store for the iPod/iPhone I guess.
The Linux geeks may not like that… but I think it is an excellent idea…If Ubuntu does everything I want except for a webcam program and someone wants to write one and sell via the install function of Ubuntu then who loses in the deal.

"love their masthead today, Wednesday. They're overdoing it with the
commemorative mastheads but this is sort of fun – they're so well
established they can disguise their own name now – this one it
commemorates the invention of the bar code.
Imagine rolling that out - an act of faith that the entire
commercial world would accept that as a standard and it did
happen. I guess the big grocery chains were behind it
initally. Must have been massive planning and in that case I think
it was all industry driven- no government requirement or standard
involved. It's a wonder the whacko right doesn't come up with
something sinister about bar codes and go around obliterating them." Dick Williams
Funny I would get this email from Dick just now. I had just done a Google search and I was saying what the heck. I just woke up and had just made an install or two to my O/S Ubuntu (Linux) and I was thinking what happened to Google.

I am not sure what I was thinking today… I woke up late… I went to YouTube and decided that I had a lot of old junk and garbage on my YouTube site. I started killing off old videos that less than 500 people had watched.
I just started thinking I wish I could just start all over again…Then I looked over at my Ubuntu 9.04 install disk.
I decided …what the hell … I put in my CD drive and told it to format my entire hard drive and start all over again.. I got a warning that it would removed Windows 7 RC. I was thinking this will remove all my programs, files, photos and everything… I was thinking I do not have any back up…
I told it yes.. format it all…
I now have Ubunti 9.04 (Linux) on my computer.
I am going to hate myself in a few hours…Not sure why I did it.. Windows 7 RC was working great for me…In fact I think Windows 7 is the first O/S they have put out that you can say works. OK XP was not bad.
Not sure what got in me today… Oh well.. Guess I will install the updates to 9.04 and see what I can do with it.
By the way… I had a dual boot system before and had Ubunti on it then.. So it is not new to me.

I got my new 64bit install of Ubuntu upgraded.
Then I get an error that pops up and says "There was an error while performing indexing: Index corrupted" and it ask if you want to reindex. No matter what you say you get getting the message for awhile on the screen.
I am thinking what did I do wrong. I did a search on the Internet and found it is bug in Ubuntu 9.04. It has been reported and they are working on it. Sort of spoils my upgrade.
I felt pretty good today. I do feel guilty about not going to the training class to day. I guess I would feel worst if I had gone to the class and wet my pants on the way to the class. I do not think I could take waiting at a bus stop for 40 minutes with no rest room around.
I may feel good because I been drinking Coke today. I saw Coke at the store..I swear it was calling me…It taste so good…but I will have to try and go back on the wagon.

My computer has been working great with Windows 7 RC. I am a fan of Windows 7.
I was sitting here and I just decided that I wanted to try Ubuntu 64 bit again. I have used Ubuntu a long time and have had it set up in the past on this computer to dual boot with Windows.
I knew there would be danger but I wanted to try 64 bit.
So I have just installed it here. When I re-boot I see a boot loader giving me the choice of Ubuntu or Windows but I have not attempted to get into Windows yet. Cross your fingers.
I have a DVD for Ubuntu 9.04 but it does not say 32 bit or 64 bit on it. I could not find it anyplace. My guess is that the install program might ask which you want but I had an old DVD of Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit so I decided to use it.
That install went OK. Then it told me there was a new version 8.10 and I installed it.
I am surprised I have not see any notice to upgrade to 9.04 yet.
I have not got Flash working yet and you need that for YouTube and lots of other stuff.
I did install Cheese and it works with my Logitech 9000 Pro.
Photo above taken just now using Cheese.

I love you windows. Smile
Yes after about 24 hours I installed Windows 7 RC. I formatted and removed Ubuntu 9.04. I still love Ubuntu. It is great. You can get a DVD, for free, from them that will let you try it. You can put it in your DVD drive and it will not touch your existing software. You can just try it and see how you like it. You can do an install if you want and wipe out your existing software. You can install it and have dual boot. You can even install it so it runs inside of Windows. So if you think you are interested in Ubuntu give it a try. Visit: www.ubuntu.com and www.canonical.com
Now why am I installing Windows 7 RC again? I think I am just crazy.
I could not get my webcam to do much under Ubuntu. That is the short coming with it. I did get it to work at last. I even made a video. It was in some strange format. I looked for a Linux program to change the format to MP3 or AVI and could not find one.
I have paid for a bunch of Windows programs to do that and I have paid for all the DivX programs etc. I just have a lot of money invested in Windows software.
So I come back on my knees and ask Windows to forgive me and profess my love for Windows.
For give this old man for leaving the fold. Smile
Now I start again installing programs and trying to get Windows 7 RC nice and warm for me.
It is a lot of work. No I never heard of a back up. Smile
This time I will not make the mistake of installing Trend Micro AntiVirus. In fact I installed McAfee just now. I just installed IncrediMail. I paid for it years ago but you can use it for free by letting it display a banner adv. I like it better than Outlook Express and other programs.
Well it is almost 2 AM I had better get to work and see how many activation codes I can find for the programs I have paid for over the years. That will keep me busy.

The video above is NOT me but I agree with much that he says.
For the last 24 hours plus I have been working night and day to get Windows 7 RC all set up on my computer. I had a few blue screens. A anti-virus program crashed it. I had problems getting it un-installed but did a recovery and got it back to the state it was before the crash. Then later I installed a keyboard driver and it was doing a blue screen warning each re-boot. I removed the keyboard driver and all was OK.
Then I started to get things installed on my computer. I dug and found the code for different software that I had paid for and got it installed. Windows 7 RC was looking pretty good. I liked the feel of it and the look of it.
I hated that it kept wanting to run their messenger.
If they get everything fixed with Windows 7 it is going to be their best version of Windows so far.
I woke up today and I still had a lot of programs that I needed to install and I was thinking which one is going to crash Windows today.
I just got this feeling that it is not worth it.
Then I decided that I wanted to be free of Windows. I am tried of waiting for Windows to crash. I am tried of installing it and getting everything on it and then it works great for months and then it sucks. The only way to keep a good working version of Windows is to format every six months or each year.
I do not know if this guy is correct or not but in this video this guy says that the current Windows 7 RC when it is ready is going to cost $400.00 for the version. I am sure that would be the full cost and you would get it for less if you owned old versions of Windows.
He talks about Ubuntu and as you know I am a big fan of Ubuntu.
To make a long story short..I just formatted my entire 250 GB hard drive and I put on Ubuntu 9.04. I hope that is the end of Windows. I am sick and tired of the poor service and bugs and crashes and problems of Windows.
Now to be honest…how long can I do without all of the programs that I paid for and have been using on Windows? I am be back installing Windows tomorrow. I hope and pray not but I know there are going to be programs that I feel I just must have and I paid for them and they run under Windows only.
We will see what happens.

The other day I saw that McAfee had found "Generic PUP.X!hv.g" and could not remove it from my system but reported it was not a problem. Today I decided to try and remove it and find out about it.
I did a Google search for it and found a site and clicked on the site. A install window came up and said I needed to installed a program. I clicked No not to install but no matter what I clicked on to not install it the window would not leave. I had to close Firefox.
When I started Firefox back up it went to that install page and I had that window to deal with….
I never installed it..Well I never clicked to install it.
I did a re-boot.
Most of my programs are missing. All sort of other problems.
I have now booted up in Ubuntu. I used the disk burner program to burn the image of Windows 7 to a DVD.
It just got done but I got the message that some files may be bad.
My hope is that that message was not correct.
Well I am going to re-boot and see if I can install Windows 7.
Even if I do get Windows 7 installed I will have lost all my data and programs that I had paid for etc.
Have I said I hate Windows?

Oh my God here is something I have got to get. It is a webcam and it is 3D. I could have so much fun with a 3D webcam.
Plus it should work with Linux on my computer. The price is $89.99 and they have it at Amazon.
I put it on my Amazon WishList. I am not sure when I can afford to get it but I will be getting one for sure. When I get it I will let you know how it works.
Eight people did a review of it on Amazon. Two gave it five stars.
I see in one review that you get five pair of 3D glasses with the camera. Do I have five friends that want to watch me in 3D? Smile
The reviews of the camera are not great but that fact that it works with Linux is great.
