I just installed Adobe CS4. I installed the 30 day trial. I can not afford to buy it so in 30 days I will have to remove it. It is nice. I think it runs about $300.00 but college students can get it at a lower price.
Since I am going to have it for 30 days I am going to work on a few of the mastheads for my blogs and try and do a few things with it.
I still got my head cold and do not feel like doing much. Not even messing with working on images. After all these years I should be a master of working with images but I never do the hard things. I just do the simple things. If I have to look in a book or something to see how to do it … I just do not do it.
That could be the story of my life.

Make money uploading files? I found a site that is set up so that you can make money by uploading files and then you get money each time one of the files is downloaded. The site is ShareCash.
I like the idea that you get money for each file downloaded. There are other sites like this but they pay you per 1000 files downloaded or something like that. This site sounds like a good idea.
Now the question is what sort of files are someone going to pay so that they can download them?
Also it looks like the max size of a file is 200 MB and I wonder if that might be a problem.
I just made a 14 minute video for YouTube and it was a bit over 100 MB. So I guess a person could make a video on some subject and the video could be about 30 minutes and then offer it to people to download. It would have to be, I guess, some sort of help file or how to do file. But then it would have to be something that people could not find for free on the Internet.
Anyway just wanted to pass on the information about this site/service. I will be signing up for it and I will be trying to think of some way to make a few dollars with their site. Right now the question is how do you do that?
I just signed up for the Affiliate end of the service so if you do click on the link above and if you do sign up and if you do make some money I would get some money at the same time.

SAN FRANCISCO – Google Inc., the Internet’s most profitable company, is giving $2 million to support Wikipedia, a volunteer-driven reference tool that has emerged as one of the Web’s most-read sites.
The donation announced Wednesday matches the largest grant made so far to Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit group that oversees the 7-year-old Wikipedia. Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar also donated $2 million to Wikimedia six months ago through one of his investment arms.
The latest largesse has catapulted Wikimedia beyond its $10.6 million revenue target for its fiscal year ending in June. That goal had looked ambitious, given that it represented an increase of more than 20 percent from $8.7 million a year earlier.
But the worst recession since World War II evidently didn’t dampen support for the Internet’s most popular encyclopedia, which has more than 14 million entries written and edited by some 100,000 unpaid contributors in about 270 languages.
Wikimedia, which gets most of its revenue from donations, has collected contributions from more than 240,000 individuals so far this fiscal year, mostly in small sums.
I think Wikipedia is great and use it a great deal so I am glad that Google made a big donation.
I use Wikipedia a lot in my blogs. I always try and give credit when I do.

I just installed “The fastest browser on Earth” Opera 10.50.
“Opera Software's beta of Opera 10.5 leapfrogged every rival to become the world's fastest browser, benchmark tests show.
Released on Thursday and powered by a new JavaScript engine, Opera 10.5 beat all comers to easily take the top speed spot.
According to tests run by Computerworld , Opera 10.5 was nearly 15% faster than Safari for Windows and almost 20% faster than Google 's Chrome, the previous No. 1 and No. 2 browsers. Opera's preview was more than twice as fast as Mozilla's Firefox 3.6, over eight times faster than Opera 10.10, and 10 times faster thanMicrosoft 's Internet Explorer 8 (IE8)…” PCWorld
I just installed it and I will let you know what I think about it soon.
Update: I had problems with Opera 10.5 beta. It would just be gone. I would have to re-start it. It gave me a couple of warnings. Now it is beta so that is to be expected but I removed it. My recommendation is wait until it is not beta. I am back using Chrome.

“It’s time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate
While most people who tested Windows 7 have now moved to the final version, some are still running the Release Candidate. If you haven’t moved yet, it’s time to replace the RC.
Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.
The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.
To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. For more details about replacing the RC, see the Knowledge Base article KB 971767. For more information, visit the Window 7 Forum.
Thanks again for helping us test Windows 7.

“San Francisco, California (CNN) — Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday unveiled the iPad, the widely and wildly anticipated tablet-style computer that he called "a truly magical and revolutionary product."
"What this device does is extraordinary," Jobs said. "It is the best browsing experience you’ve ever had. … It’s unbelievably great … way better than a laptop. Way better than a smartphone."
The computer will act as a sort of missing link between the two. The model Jobs demonstrated at an invitation-only event in San Francisco operated without a hardware keyboard, with Jobs typing on what he described as a nearly full-size touchscreen keyboard.
"It’s a dream to type on," he said.
It has a nearly 10-inch screen, runs existing apps from the Apple apps store and is available in 16-gigabyte, 32-gigabyte and 64-gigabyte versions, according to Jobs…”
Wow… God I want one of them. It will hard for me to come up with the money for one of them but I sure want one of them. The 16 GB one will be $499.00 and that is a lot of money for me to come up with now days.

“Mozilla’s Security team has disclosed a very interesting piece of research which suggests people refused to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox because they were afraid the browser would expose their, ahem, private collection of websites.
In May, the company decided to have one last attempt at persuading the people on Firefox 2 to move up to Firefox 3, by hitting users of the old version with a pop-up that prompted them to upgrade. Those who declined were invited to fill out a questionnaire, asking them to reveal why they didn’t want the latest software.
The number one reason for not upgrading was the new location bar, and the fact that it delved into people’s bookmark collections to suggest sites as they typed. No fewer than 25% of Firefox 3 refuseniks cited this as the reason they wouldn’t upgrade. In fact, almost all of the people who provided feedback had tried Firefox 3, didn’t like what they saw, and headed back to Firefox 2…”
I just found the above post at PC Pro site. It is dated August 2009. I was not aware of this information. Firefox is now up to version 3.6 so my guess is they fixed what people did not like. What is interesting is the large number of people with porn on their book mark lists.

Jack Wallen has an article at TechRepublic on Claws Mail for Windows.
I think most of us want to have our email online someplace so that we can get it from any computer even when we are out but some of us still miss having a program like Evolution or Outlook Express.
Some of us will know Claws Mail from Linux. It is fast and powerful.
If you are interested you can get full details at the link above.
I installed it for one of my email accounts because I am tired of Gmail putting all my email into bundles and mixing them. I always have this fear I am going to reply to the wrong person and send the wrong email.
So I am playing with Claws Mail right now. It is free of course.

"(WIRED) — Google's much-anticipated new phone, the HTC-designed Nexus One, could make its debut next week.
Google has scheduled a press event for Tuesday, January 5 at its Mountain View, California, headquarters. Though the company hasn't mentioned Nexus One, the invitation mentions Android, Google's mobile operating system for phones, and the company is widely expected to show the device that has had smartphone industry watchers buzzing for weeks…"
I hope that Google does announce tomorrow the release of their Google Nexus phone. I hope it is unlocked and I hope we can just buy it for x amount of money. We will see what happens tomorrow.
Reports are that it will be; GMS-device, 3.7 inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, and a accelerometer and compass. It sounds good.
If I can afford it and it runs advertising to help make it affordable I do not have a problem with that happening. I am looking for a neat phone that I can afford to buy and I am willing to pay as much as $50.00 a month but $40.00 a month max would be much better.
It would be great if it sold unlocked for $200.00 but I fear it is going to cost $400.00 and if that is the case that is out of my price range. I might go for $300.00 but I hope they come up with someway to sell them for $300.00 each.
We will see what happens tomorrow.

I just installed Apple QuickTime 7 Pro on my computer again. I installed RealPlayer the other day. I am not sure why I hate both of these programs.
I think there are a number of reasons and I will find out soon I am sure.
I know with RealPlayer that I paid many times years ago for the software packages that they had and they would change the version AND the names of the packages and I would end up with no idea what I paid for or know how to re-register. Real Producer was one of the software packages. I think I paid for it a number of times and still do not have any of their software registered.
Now the Apple QuickTime Pro 7 for Windows I know I paid for it in January of 2006 and they still call it QuickTime Pro 7 AND my code still works on it.
I suspect that I will find out what the other things are that I do not like about RealPlayer and Apple QuickTime is pretty soon. I know I have a history of not liking the software.

I have started getting the Windows blue screen crashes. The computer will just crash and burn. I can be doing something or just watching a video.
From what I can tell from checking on line it is a device driver and I been having USB problems. It seems like everything I have is USB.
I will just have to try and see what is the newest USB device and try and do away with them one at a time. Of course the newest is my USB WiFi card and I can not do away with it. I will have to remove some of my other USB devices.
Windows is such fun.

Yesterday I was using my computer and not doing anything special or different and the screen when black and the computer did a re-boot.
I was gone all day today but in a short period of time tonight it did it two times.
The first time I told Russell, my in house computer expert, he told me to turn off the auto re-boot setting and I did.
The second time it took place the computer did not re-boot and I got the blue screen and it said there was a problem following ADF.SYS
I did a search on the Internet and I found a number of links about this problem…
“Description: afd.sys is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Known file sizes on Windows XP are 138,496 bytes (88% of all occurrence), 131,968 bytes, 138,368 bytes, 130,688 bytes, 138,112 bytes, 273,920 bytes.
The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel or by other programs. afd.sys is a Windows core system file. The program has no visible window. File afd.sys is a trustworthy file from Microsoft. afd.sys seems to be a compressed file. Therefore the technical security rating is 0% dangerous, however also read the users reviews.” FileNet
I found the following which makes sense to me because I been having problems with my WiFi card and connection problems the last couple of days.
I hope the problems will be fixed tomorrow when I stop using the WiFi card and go to a cable connection.
Abstract: afd.sys, which is part of the TCP/IP stack in Microsoft Windows, contains a memory leak in many versions of the driver.
“…afd.sys, which is part of the TCP/IP stack in Microsoft Windows, contains a memory leak in many versions of the driver. This leak can result in Windows consuming more and more memory as part of its Pool Nonpaged application under certain circumstances when InterBase is connected. ..” Embarcadero Developer Network
I hope my problem is fixed tomorrow. We will see what happens.

People are starting to say that Google is to big and has to much information on people. Google has set up a service they call “Google Dashboard.” It looks like you have to have a Google account and then you can log into the service.
It will then show you what information they have on you and allow you to make changes to the information.
I do not see how this helps the privacy issues. It is just the sort of information you would expect them to have about you if you use any of their services.
I think the problem areas would be information they get from you if you use Google Mail and the information they get on you when you do a search using Google.

Today new rules from the Federal Trade Commission go into effect. The FTC is going to crack down on bloggers who review or promote products and get freebies or money and do not tell readers.
I have always told you up front if I am getting any money or anything else. The new rules will not bring much of a change here. The new rules will make me think a bit more when I post something.
I post here daily about sites that I like or services or things I buy or want to buy and never tell you that I do not get paid for those comments. I may have to start telling you, some how, that it is an un-paid recommendation. I know that is not the rule… I need to tell you when I AM getting paid. But I do not even want anyone to think that I might be breaking the rules. I think the FTC rules are a good idea.
I have seen a few excellent blogs that I did read go to hell… Because when sites like PayPerPost and others started up …those blogs that were so excellent would then be just post after post of promotions so they would get paid.

I got two donations today…So I was wrong the other day…When I said no more donations…
I used one donation for food… Now I can eat until I get my SS money. I used part of the other donation to buy a theme for Howard’s Notebook. If you want to see what the site looks like after getting the new theme check out Howard’s Notebook.
Good things come in threes so if you want to donate please do so… any amount is welcome.
OR is it bad things happen in threes?
I love the new theme on HNB. It took just a very little time to set up the blog just the way I wanted it plus there are lots more things I can do with it fast and easy. If you got a WordPress site and you host it yourself I recommend the theme. Click on the banner on the bottom right and I make a commission if you buy it.

Today Windows 7 is out. I am sure lots of people are going to be buying it. I think a lot of XP users will just keep using XP. Vista people should go to Windows 7 because Vista is crap.
Lot of Windows 7 will be sold.. But many people are going to hold out if they are happy with XP.
I can not bring myself to spent the money right now for Windows 7.
I can see having a major hardware or software crash and then going out and getting Windows 7 to start all over again.
I am waiting for October 29th when Ubuntu 9.10 will be released. It is free. I have been running Ubuntu for years.. It just is fast, it is pretty neat …but I just can not replace Windows with it right now. I hope 9.10 will let me say goodbye to Windows. I do not think it will be that complete.

You would NOT believe the software that I have installed over the past few days. I have even installed MS Service Pack 3. If they say they have something…I install it.
I got my Netflix DVD today. I put it in the computer to see if this computer will play a video DVD for me.
I get the above message: “Windows Media Player can not play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.”
My God…I been installing everything from Windows for days.
“Windows Media Player becomes a full-featured DVD player when combined with a DVD decoder (MPEG-2 decoder) with features such as full-screen video playback controls, DVD chapter listings, and integrated cover art.”
For Windows XP
“If you are running Windows XP, you can enhance your DVD playback experience by purchasing a DVD decoder pack. To find out if you already have a DVD decoder installed on your Windows XP–based computer and whether it is compatible with Windows Media Player, install and run the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility.”
