Gun Control
My comments and feelings on Guns and Gun Control.
I was a gun owner most of my life. I carried a gun at work from 1971 to 2000. I been shot at and have had a family member shot and killed. A number of my co-workers and friends were shot and two were killed in the line of duty. I came to work to find their blood on the ground and their activity sheets not complete because they were shot during their shift.
I was a member of the NRA for many years. I let my membership come to an end when I saw that they lied in their magazine and when I saw they did not care about America but only about a bigger organization.
Readers of my blogs feel that I am anti-gun. I am not anti-gun. I do think that we need stronger and better laws on guns.
I have been debating this subject online since 1982. It was a big subject for debate on my bulletin board system back before there was the web. I learned something all those many years ago and that was the people that debate the subject never change their mind. They have their belief and they never listen to the other side and are never going to change their position. So if you have a position on the subject I know you are not going to change it no matter what I say.
It was my belief that the Second Amendment was written so that people could belong to a "militia" and since 1980 I been wanting the court to rule on the matter so that we could put an end to that part of the debate. I did not know how they would rule but I wanted a decision. The court, last year, did rule on the matter. My side lost. The court ruled that the American people have a right to own firearms period.
They ruled that government can have laws as long as they do not prevent Americans from their having their Second Amendment right.
Almost 100 people die each day in the United States from gun violence and about 10% are children. About 15,000 homicides and 18,000 suicides a year in the United States. These numbers do not even count the accidental gun deaths.
I want some gun control laws that will help cut down on these numbers and make it safer for all Americans.
The City of New York launched an undercover investigation to expose how a dangerous loophole in the law allows criminals to get guns. Watch the undercover footage that shines a spotlight on illegal sales at gun shows.
See all footage and read the report at http://www.nyc.gov/gunshow
For handguns I think there should be more than just an "instant background check." I want a police background check and not a computer check. I think the police should do an investigation. I do not have a problem with a "instant check" (computer) for a person buying a firearm other than a handgun.
I do not think that people should be allowed to buy assault rifles. I also do not think that people need to be buying clips that hold 60 rounds. I am not sure what the cut off size should be on number of rounds. For my S&W 40 cal I had 11 round clips and with one in the weapon that gave me 12 rounds. I liked having 12 rounds in the weapon after so many years of just having a six round handgun.
I think it is getting crazy here in the United States…People shooting each other over road rage. Gangs with assault rifles. People walking around with guns. Police and others shooting each other by accident. People getting crazy for a short period of time and killing their family and then taking their own life.
I think we need to look and find things that we can do to make things safer for Americans. I am not one that thinking arming everyone is going to make us safer.
